Retrofitting Under-Usage is a research-by-design project of the Urban Design Seminar. The seminar investigates a series of low-density residential subdivisions in the Hasselt-Genk urban region. The central question is whether these neighborhoods can support more efficient usage in the form of interactions between diverse spatial demands: housing, commerce, nature, industry, and so on. The seminar looks at concepts of recycling waste, energy and space, translating theory of the circular economy and ecosystem services to urban design and architecture.
